You Are What You Drink Party: Ideas To Quench Your Thirst

Just like its relation, the ‘you are what you eat’ theme party, this is a fun and easy theme to host and dress up for.

The party theme is pretty much exactly what it says. You dress as either your favourite drink or as the brand logo or mascot of your favourite drink.

There is an assumption that this is all about alcohol, but there’s nothing that says you have to dress up as an alcoholic drink or brand mascot. There are plenty of cool costume ideas that don’t just revolve around the booze.

I don’t know about you, but I’m thirsty for some answer, so let’s get into it.

Party Decor

OK so I mentioned that it doesn’t have to revolve around booze but hey, it’s a party and for most people it will and, for most people, it’s going to involve a lot of booze. With this in mind, I don’t think the decor matters too much.

Having said that, it does make sense to decorate your venue as a bar of some sort. You could either have someone serve drinks from behind it.

You could even put a vintage spin on things and decorate the venue like an old-fashioned speak easy and serve drinks out of tea cups and vases.

Don’t get too caught up in the details, though, as the point of this party is to dress as your drink and…well, drink. Just make sure you do it responsibly.

Invitations

Due to the nature of just getting together and drinking but in a fun drink based costume, there’s no need to overthink this. You could in fact skip the invites altogether and just invite people via social media instead, as this is probably the easier option.

You are What You Drink Costume Ideas

There are countless different drinks in the world, and everybody’s different in what they like. Remember, this doesn’t have to just be about alcohol and getting drunk, the theme is dress as a drink so dress up how you want and don’t bow to peer pressure to drink alcohol.

There’s a wide scope to be really creative with your costume ideas, but if you don’t have the time or the skills to make a costume, there’s some great ready-made ones you can buy. Check out my list of ideas in this post.

Food & Drink To Serve

The drink side of this is easy to take care of. I think the Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) rule is perfectly suited to this party. For some great photo opportunities, you should get guests to bring drinks of the drink they have dressed up as.

You can still lay on some extra drinks of your own and have a server behind a bar you set up like I mentioned in the decor section, but I really think BYOB is the best option for this theme.

As for food, people are going to be less bothered about this, so just lay on some snack type foods like chips, nuts and some sandwiches. Anything that helps satisfy that carb craving people have when they drink alcohol.

Music

Music can be anything from a playlist of what the hosts and guests want to play or have a friend DJ some tunes.

As it’s a drinks theme party try and have at least some of the music based around the theme of drinking. Again, it doesn’t have to be alcohol it can be anything related to drinks and drinking.

Here are a couple of playlists:

  • Drinks On Me – A massive playlist with over a thousand mainly hip hop and trap tunes
  • House Party – A good mix of the like of Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal & Avicii

Drink Themed Activities

There are so many drinking games that you can play at a party like this that they could keep you occupied all night. A few of my personal favourites are:

  • Drunk Jenga – Play Jenga in the normal way but write instructions on each brick, like drink a shot or wear a silly hat for 10 minutes. As the evening goes on people’s skills will get worse and the game gets more amusing.
  • Beer Pong – It’s a classic party game that I love to play. In case you really need it explaining, each team has two sets of cups laid out on a table in a pyramid shape. Each cup is filled with a drink, doesn’t have to be alcoholic, by the way. Each team throws a ping pong ball into the other team’s cup. If it lands, a team member has to drink that drink and remove it from the table. The team who has all cups removed is the loser – and the drunkest.
  • Never Have I Ever – A great game to get to know people, but also one to make you cringe when sober. One person says ‘never have I ever’ then whatever they haven’t done. If a person in the group has done it, they have to drink.

There’s loads more ideas here. Also, don’t forget to impose universal party rules on your guests. This could be things like only drinking with your nondominant, taking a shot every time you swear or, my personal favourite, downing a drink if you bring up a certain topic of conversation like politics, religion etc ya know, the real buzz killer topics at a party.

So there you have it. I hope you’ve got enough ideas to have a great ‘You are what you drink party.’ Just remember you really don’t have to drink alcohol at this party and no one should pressure you to do so. If you do want to indulge, just remember to do so responsibly and stay safe.
