This costume theme, along with it’s partner ‘you are what you drink,’ party is a really easy theme to host.
The premise is simple, have your guests attend your party dressed as either their favourite food or the brand mascot for their favourite food, like the M&Ms guy for example.
It’s certainly on the more unusual side of theme party ideas, but it’s so much fun seeing what your friends come up with as costumes and to learn what their favourite food is.
Hmm… Is anyone else feeling hungry now? Let’s get into it.
Party Decor
The costumes are the main focus of this theme, so it works to either host indoors or outside, weather dependent of course.
The decor doesn’t matter too much as it’s all about the costumes. If you really want to make an effort in this area, you can host your party inside and set it up as a restaurant or fast food joint complete with counter to serve food at.
Invitations
Once you have decided on where to host the party, it’s time to get the invitations out. Explain the premise clearly on the invite, and of course make it a food themed one. Also, don’t forget to ask about any food or dietary requirements. This is especially important for one of the activity ideas outlined later in the blog.
You Are What You Eat Costume Ideas
As it’s about your guests favourite food, the sky really is the limit here. There are some fantastic, readily available costumes available off the shelf online. Get some great ideas for this in my article, here.
My personal favourite is when people come dressed as entire meals or couples get in on the act by dressing as burgers and fries for example.
Food & Drink To Serve
This theme definitely lends itself better to a buffet style arrangement. Although it would be funny to see people sit down at a formal meal dressed as a slice of pizza, it would also be pretty uncomfortable for people in certain costumes. It’s a light and fun theme, so keep the food options the same.
It’s likely people are going to come dressed as burgers, pizzas, slices of cake and so on, so have the food reflect that by serving mini versions of these things, so people can grab bits when they want. Trust me, it’s hilarious seeing someone dressed as a sausage eating a sausage!
As for drinks are concerned, I am a strong advocate of bringing your own. Lay on some soft drinks for people, by all means, but let your guests choose their own alcohol. Just make sure you leave enough space in the fridge for their booze!
Music
Music can be anything suited to the host and guests tastes, but it would be really fun to have a food theme to your music selection, interspersed with ad jingles from classic commercials.
Songs like ‘Eat It’ by Weird Al or how about a mix by DJ Food? There’s tons of options available to relate the music to the theme.
Here’s a couple of playlists to get you started:
- Songs about food – a self-explanatory play list that has some great artists on it.
- DJ Food Solid Steel Mix – This mix is a personal favourite of mine. I played it over and over back in the day. Hip hop, ska and drum n bass all get crammed in there. Perfect party music.
Food themed activities
There’s quite a lot of both civilised and rather uncivilised activities you can do at a food theme party. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
- Have a food fight – The most uncivilised activity is first on the list and best left towards the end of the night. Only involve those who don’t mind getting messy, and make sure you can easily clean up afterwards.
- Best costume contest – I particularly enjoy this for this theme because there’s some great costumes available off the rack but also because some people really make an effort if they dress as full meals. Let people know in advance you plan to do this and make the prizes good like restaurant vouchers.
- Photo Booth – A good idea for any costume party but no matter if you don’t want to splash out on one. You definitely need to take photos of people eating the food they’re dressed as because it’s so funny!
- Guess the food – This is just for fun. Get some unusual and usual food items, blindfold people and have them try and guess what they’re eating. Don’t forget to ask guests about food allergies and dietary requirements beforehand though.
Hopefully this post has you given you enough ideas to host a you are what you eat party with confidence. I’m really hungry now so I’m off to go get some lunch.
